DRD Summer School 2025: Shaping the next generation

Nathan Ashley previews this year’s programme designed to promote access to the profession

As the workplace continues to evolve, the barriers facing young people trying to access competitive industries remain stubbornly high. Too often, students are asked to make big decisions about their futures without ever having seen what a career in law, media, public affairs or strategic communications looks like, or what skills they will need to succeed.

It was in response to this challenge that the DRD Summer School was launched three years ago. This year’s programme, delivered in partnership with social mobility charity Future First, is designed to give sixth form students a genuine experience of the world of work – equipping them with the insights, and confidence to take their first steps into strategic communications, law, media, and public affairs.

About DRD Partnership

DRD Partnership is a strategic communications consultancy, working at the highest levels of business, media, law, and government. The team includes former journalists, lawyers, advisers, and public affairs experts, and it works across sectors to help clients manage risk, navigate complex issues, and tell compelling stories. The Summer School reflects this breadth – opening doors for young people to experience the world we work in first-hand.

Building on the success of our previous Summer Schools this year’s programme promises to be the most ambitious yet – giving students direct access to leading professionals, behind-the-scenes access to key institutions, and practical hands-on training that brings the world or work to life.

Lawrence Dore, Partner at DRD Partnership, said:
“The industries we work in thrive on fresh thinking and new perspectives. Our Summer School is about giving young people a genuine foot in the door, not just exposure to professional environments, but real insight into what a career in communications or the law might look like, and how to get there.”

A three-day experience like no other

From the Houses of Parliament to the chambers of the Royal Courts of Justice, the DRD Summer School 2025 will provide a learning experience that blends theory with real-world exposure.

Over three days, participants will:

  • Step inside the world of PR and policy: Explore the fundamentals of strategic communications, and reputation management. Gain first-hand insight into the role of public relations in shaping narratives that drive change.
  • Experience the legal landscape: Hear from leading legal professionals at Mishcon de Reya LLP, learn about the complexities of the judicial system, and witness the workings of the courts up close. Whether it’s commercial litigation, regulatory affairs, or human rights law, this experience will provide invaluable insight and time with lawyers.

Hazel Brayden, Managing Associate at Mishcon de Reya LLP, said:

“At Mishcon, we know that the law touches every aspect of society, from innovation and technology to justice and equality. The DRD Summer School is a brilliant initiative that gives students an authentic view of the legal profession, and we’re proud to be working with the team again to welcome new students and be involved in helping inspire the next generation of legal minds.”

  • Explore digital comms: Visit Snapchat’s UK headquarters to see how social media platforms shape public discourse, influence policy, and engage with issues like online safety and digital rights.

Freddie Cook, Public Policy Manager UK & Ireland at Snap Inc., said:

“Young people are at the heart of everything we do at Snap – and it’s vital they feel empowered to shape the platforms and policies that impact their lives. We’re excited to work with DRD Partnership on this initiative and help inspire the next generation of digital changemakers.”

  • Develop essential employability skills: From CV workshops and interview coaching to hands-on case studies, students will leave the programme equipped with the skills and confidence needed to take their first steps towards a career in communications, law, media, or public affairs.
  • Meet the leaders shaping tomorrow: Participants will have the rare opportunity to engage with policymakers, lawyers, and senior executives, which in the past has included meeting with the Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan. But also, senior comms professionals at Transport for London (TfL), Matt Brown and Victoria Harrison-Cook MBE, alongside in-house legal teams from across the public and private sectors.
Future First, CEO, Sue Riley, said: “By opening doors to students who might not have considered careers in these fields, we’re helping to create a more equitable future. We’re extremely pleased to be working with DRD Partnership for the third year running.”
